CSCMP Tours Performance Bicycle

Thursday, May 28th, 2009

Last week, the Tarheel Chapter of CSCMP toured the Performance Bicycle distribution center in Chapel Hill, NC.  They are the #1 cycling-specific retailer in the US and market through a catalog, web site, and 84 retail stores. 60% of their business is done through the retail stores. The facility is 120,000 square feet and ships 1 million packages per year with an average of 5-7 items per box. per customer. 135,000 bicycles were shipped in 2008. They recycle stretch wrap, banding, corrugated, and paper.

This center is a “paperless” environment in which personnel record all inventory transactions by using hand-held computers. All product movements from storage, to picking, to the shipping dock are updated in real-time.  Time, date, and user ID are electronically stamped on each activity. Every box has a unique LPN or locator case number  assigned at receiving and every item is weighed and measured and data is entered in the system.

The warehousing space is configured specifically for each of the three primary activities that occur there. The first area is designed for receiving and bulk storage of full case merchandise. The second area is for non-conveyable large cartons, and the third area, which contains the two-level pick module.

Our Sustainability Responsibility

Friday, May 15th, 2009

The Tar Heel Chapter of CSCMP held a dinner meeting in Research Triangle Park, NC with a presentation on Challenges & Rewards:  Achieving a Sustainable Business.  There were representatives from a local university business school, trucking, technology manufacturing, cosmetics manufacturing and packaging companies.  The presentation was given by Nancy Geisler, Vice President of Sustainability, for Unisource Worldwide, Inc.

Nancy gave a great overview of sustainability in business and examples of what many companies are already doing.  First is to consider price versus cost, even though you have found the best “price”, what is it really costing?  Is the environment impacted negatively in order to create that best price?  Another is to more efficiently transport goods through packaging changes or ensuring full truckloads every time.

Thank you to my teammates and friends who walked withTeam PeakLogix and the more than 9,000 other participants.

Fuji Robotics Videos

Wednesday, May 6th, 2009

Below is a series of short videos featuring Fuji palletizing robots.  As you’ll see, product is fed into the work cell via powered conveyor.  The robot picks the product and places it in a predetermined pattern on the pallet.  The robot then builds each subsequent layer of product until the pallet is full.  At this time, the full pallet is removed, either manually or automatically, and a new empty pallet is presented.  The cycle repeats.

Note that the actual picking of the product is achieved through a custom designed end-effecter, or “hand” of the robot.  The videos show various styles of end-effecters in use, ranging from clamp style for boxes to vacuum style for use placing boxes, slip sheets, and empty pallets.
