Bob’s Blog ~ CSCMP Visits Walmart DC

Monday, April 27th, 2009
The Central Virginia chapter of CSCMP arranged for a tour last week of Walmart’s Petersburg Distribution Center. We had 40 folks from various industries including trucking, commercial real estate, manufacturing, distribution and service related industries.  Walmart’s General Manager for the facility, Marc Swienton, opened the evening with a presentation on the DC which included its size (1,000,000 sq. ft.), its capacity (1,500,000 cases a night), its FTE count (750) and how long they’ve been there (20 years).

We then toured a few parts of the facility.  The DC was very well organized, clean and busy.  We looked at the bulk locations, pick modules, sortation, conveyor merge section, shipping and receiving.  Marc had some of his managers walk with us to answer questions and we found that Walmart measures just about everything to make sure that they are getting the right products out the door to the stores to replenish merchandise that’s been sold.

All in all, an outstanding, educational tour with plenty of opportunity for networking.

PeakLogix Races for the Cure

Wednesday, April 15th, 2009

komen-logoYou may know that one in eight women will be stricken with breast cancer in her lifetime. What you may not know is that you can help these women and thousands of others in the fight against breast cancer.

On May 9, 2009, PeakLogix will be participating in the Susan G. Komen Race for the Cure in Richmond with a great team of dedicated people. Join the fight by registering as part of our team or by supporting our efforts with a pledge contribution. The money raised through the Race will fund vital education, screening, and treatment programs for under-served women in our own community and support the national search for a cure.

We need your support! Every step counts!

Bob’s Blog ~ Burrrrrrrrrrrr

Friday, April 10th, 2009

Yesterday, I went out-of-town to see a client whose 15 year old, freezer-installed pallet flow system wasn’t working anymore.  In fact, the brake rollers have gotten to the point where they won’t stop anything and the pallets zoom through the system at what looks like 100 miles an hour and then are jolted to a sudden, jarring stop.

The impact shifts product on the pallet and threatens to expel products in motion onto the warehouse floor.  In other words, it needs to be fixed!  Working in the freezer (-10 degrees) for a couple of hours was interesting as different parts of my body got cold each time I went in.  My hands and face were always numb and my pen only worked for 5 minutes until the ink started freezing.  Extreme conditions, but fun work!!

New Facility at Avid Medical (post by Bob Giberson)

Thursday, April 9th, 2009

On April 7, we toured Avid Medical’s new facility in Toano, VA.  We were all impressed with Chairman Mike Sahady’s vision of what Avid’s headquarters facility could be.

The existing building is great but the addition is even better.  They’ve added a great new lobby, new breakroom,  executive boardroon, a huge training room and beautiful new executive offices.  The manufacturing and distribution facility starts with a beautiful, bright glossy concrete floor and a 30′ clear ceiling with new design T8 flourescent lights.  It’s like daytime in there.

The conveyor, pick module and racking system  provided by PeakLogix  all add to the functionality of the  facility design.  The entire addition turned out great and Avid is always eager and open to a plant tour if anyone is interested.   Just give me a call and I will make the arrangements.
